Amma came to the hall waving the Indian flag. She was greeted by hundreds of devotees holding flags and blowing conches.
Responding to a satsang, Amma reflected on the spiritual, cultural, and patriotic significance of India, emphasizing the distinction between political freedom and internal, spiritual freedom.
Amma said that true love for the nation goes beyond external displays, such as simply waving the national flag. Every individual has a personal duty, or Dharma, and a responsibility toward their Motherland.
When individuals cultivate an expansive mind rooted in love and compassion, they naturally lose the urge to invade or exploit other nations. Amma noted that India is a nation that has never invaded other countries or occupied their territories. This statement was met with a loud round of applause from the audience.
Amma reflected that while India attained political independence, real freedom is internal. She shared the example of a bird kept in a cage, where it may be well cared for, yet still longs for the true freedom of the open sky. Amma explained that breaking free from the clutches of the mind, ego, and personal likes and dislikes is when one experiences true freedom.
Amma emphasized India’s foundational heritage of spirituality, unity, and universal love, and wished for Dharma and harmony to prevail everywhere.
