Amma releases landmark book on Indian Legal Philosophy

10 Jul 2025, Amritapuri Ashram

During the auspicious Guru Purnima celebrations, Amma released the book “An Introduction to Indian Jurisprudence”, authored by renowned scholar Dr. K.S. Radhakrishnan, former Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. He was also the recipient of the Amrita Keerti Award {news} during the Amritavarsham 70 celebrations in 2023.

Commissioned by the Amrita School of Law, the book offers a deep exploration of India’s legal roots through the lens of Dharma, Karma, and Vedic wisdom. Unlike conventional legal texts that focus solely on enforcement, tax collection, or punishment—as discussed in texts like Chanakya’s Neeti Shastra—this work dives into the philosophy behind the formulation of laws themselves.

“This book is not about how to impose law,” explained Dr. Radhakrishnan, “but about why and how laws are to be conceived from the Indian philosophical framework.”

The book will form the foundation of a new course on Indian Jurisprudence, to be introduced at Amrita University, Coimbatore, starting this academic year.

The release of the book during Guru Purnima—a day that honours wisdom and lineage—highlighted the importance of reclaiming India’s ancient legal consciousness rooted in righteousness and justice.
