Amma with the differently abled children

2 Aug 2017, Amritapuri Ashram

A group of around 80 students from the Amrita Institute for Differently Abled Children visited Amritapuri with their parents to get Amma’s darshan and meet her. Some were in wheelchairs.

The children offered Amma a bo x filled with malas they had made themselves. Amma enquired about their medications, the medical treatment they were receiving, their daily routines, etc.

She took time to interact with each one of them, asking them about their names, their likes, their welfare, playing with them, smiling and laughing… She joked and asked a few to sing and perform their skills which included acting and mimicking some other cinema idols. As they came for darshan she even lovingly wiped the saliva from some of their mouths.  It was so touching to watch how Amma identified with everyone’s joys and sorrows and made them all smile.

AMRITA runs two special schools for the welfare of the disabled people in Kochi and Kozhikode. The children in these institutes are taught basic self-help skills, identification of object and communication skills depending on their capacity.
