When you feel like buying something more than you need

28 Nov 2025, Amritapuri Ashram

Kochunni’s parents are from Colombia and Korea. He wants to live in the ashram. He’s hardly seven, but he came with a question as Amma was returning from darshan.

“Amma, I have vasana for buying a lot of things. How do I overcome it?”

Amma was genuinely surprised.

She looked at him and asked, “If you have a lot of food and a poor child who hasn’t eaten for many days is sitting in front of you, will you eat everything yourself, or will you share?”

“I will share,” Kochunni said immediately.

“In the same way,” Amma told him, “when you feel like buying something, remember there are many children who can’t afford such things. Think of them, and you’ll get the strength to overcome that desire. And even if you buy something, buy it and give it to a child who has less privileged.”

He nodded with full understanding, and Amma walked away to her room with that happy, gentle smile.

A seven-year-old asking about vasana. Yes, only in Amma’s world.
