The Mata Amritanandamayi Math founded by Her Holiness Mata
Amritanandamayi with its international center at Amritapuri,
Kollam, Kerala and various centers all over India has adopted
a region of earthquake-devastated Gujarat. It plans to build
nearly 2000 earthquake resistant houses using the latest technology.
Planned schools and dispensaries in the villages of Jawahar
Nagar, Modsar, Dagara, and Mokhana. The project is expected
to cost more than thirty crores of rupees and will be completed
within a year.
A team of 12 medical specialists which included one neurosurgeon,
two orthopedic surgeons, one trauma care surgeon, on anesthetist,
and one pediatrician along with two well equipped ambulances
together with a staff of 80 volunteers from the Amrita Institute
of Medical Sciences and research Institute (AIMAS), Cochin
were rushed to Anjar villages. This was followed by a batch
of 100 staff and student volunteers from the Amrita Institute
of Technology and Science (Engineering College), Amrita Institute
of Management, Amrita Institute of Computer Technology located
at Ettimadai, Coimbatore.
The team set 1200 tents in the above four villages for those
displaced by the quake. The team headed by Br. Abhayamrita
Chaitanya from Amrita Institute of Technology and Science
visited nearly 25 villages including the border village of
Khavda. A temporary hospital and 10 medical camps were set
up so as to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance
to the needy. The sophisticated medical facilities set by
the Math enabled the team of doctors to perform major operations,
minor operations, and first aid including orthopedic care.
During the 15 days stay, the medical team attended more than
10,000 cases including major/minor operations and treated
around 2000 cases of infectious disease.
The most sophisticated ambulances consisting modern gadgetry
moved in all the 25 villages with the doctors helping to pick
up helpless victims for medical treatment in the temporary
hospital as well as for sending serious cases to Naval Hospital
INS Ashwini at Mumbai.
Since the local hospitals were totally devastated and part
of the staff had died in quake, the presence of medical team
from Mata Amritanandamayi Math was made possible to the wholehearted
support received by the Holy Mother from India and abroad.

should know that a life of dedication is possible, that a
life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible."
