Entrevista Interview
Amma "I Accept the Whole World into My lap"
She transmits a current of love with every hug. She
has thousands of followers.
Born Kerala (India), 1953
Presides over the foundation "Friends of Amma"
Gandhi King Award 2002
The legend says that MATA AMRITANANDAMAYI, Amma was
born blue like Kali, the divine mother of the Hindus.
She survived bad treatment from her family and neighbours.
And at 21 years of age she manifested her mystic union
with the supreme being. Since then she opens the hearts
and comforts the pain of thousands of people through
her hug. She just filled two halls at the Mar Bella
in Barcelona.
Are you a reincarnation of God or something like
that?
God is pure consciousness. And consciousness is everywhere.
In the organic and the inorganic. In you, in me, in
this rose petal, in the sea that you see through that
window.
Did you have a revelation?
Yes,
..Each one of us form a part
of the whole. Imagine that there is a big tank of water.
Through a tap you begin to empty all the water in the
tank. If you are one with the consciousness, all the
consciousness can manifest through the (your) body.
What do you transmit in a hug?
Amma helps the people to be independent. And independence
is only possible when we realise our own real nature
with true love.
It isn't always easy.
If there is love in us, we can express this love
through our actions and words. Then there will be love
in the family and in the work place. It will extend
to all parts. And peace will reign inside and out.
Is a 15 second hug enough to achieve all this?
One second is enough to awaken the love if one is
open to receiving the hug as it is meant to be.
And how is it meant to be?
The heart should be open. It's like tuning in to
a radio. You have to turn on the transistor to be able
to hear the program.
Once it is on. Then what?
With my hug, I can wake up those who are sleeping.
If I shake them a few times, they react. But if someone
is pretending to sleep, it doesn't matter how many
times I shake them, they won't get up. Its like giving
a mirror to a blind person.
Do Bush and Sharon fit into this group?
I could try to hug them if they wanted. But Amma's
duty and those of a politician are completely distinct.
They are like judges in the courts, they approve of
some and exclude others, while my responsibility is
to be a mother, accept the whole world in my lap
The whole world?
Even a broken clock shows the correct time twice a
day. There are good qualities in the worst person.
A tolerant woman. And free from sectarianism?
I never force anyone to change their religion. On
the contrary. I ask that they remain firm in their
faith and their teachers. God isn't a limited being.
What limits us and makes us dependent is the "I." The
goal of religion is its elimination, it is compassion,
it is love expressed through every word and deed.
