Gurukula at Amrita Vidyalayam, Kodungallur

In 1987, the Amritavidyalayam Kodungallur was the first school to be started by Amma. It has taken residential children, from the age of seven, since 1989. There are between 60-70 boarders at any one time. They visit Amma as often as possible. Their parents want their children's character to be moulded by Her teachings and love.

In Sanskrit, Gurukula means "abode of the guru." It refers to India's ancient system of schooling, wherein children left home at seven to live and study with their prospective Guru for 12 years. This was seen as a preparation for their future life as a parent, breadwinner and responsible member of society. The Guru and his wife served as the children's parents and instructors. The children learned academics, spiritual instruction, the importance of serving others selflessly, and gained the courage to face the problems of life.

In Amma's modern version of the Gurukula, girls are included and positively encouraged often in areas previously reserved for boys. Everyone leads an ashram life; they get up early to perform spiritual practices before studying or working, they chant chapters of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita before meals and are encouraged to repeat their mantras mentally whenever possible.

The day ends with worship and self-study. The children receive guidance on the deeper meaning of their everyday experiences from the people who care for them, and they learn to serve others. All of them maintain a close link with Amma Herself.
