The Amrita University's School of Business (previously AIM) is another way in which Amma's is unfolding Her vision for the future. Not long after the school was inugurated in 1996, it was ranked among the top 30 management schools in the country.
The liberalisation of the Indian economy, globalisation, the opening of new markets and the lowering of trade barriers are having a far-reaching impact on Indian business. Now more than ever, India needs high-quality managers and business leaders. |
The Amrita School of Business harmoniously blends India's traditional ethos with advancements in management. The culture and teachings of Sanatana Dharma, along with modern management practices, directed for the well-being of humankind and nature is emphasised. It is an ideal symbiosis of science and spiritualitya Management Gurukula.
The school offers a postgraduate diploma in management, which is a two-year full-time, residential course. The PGDM has been recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as equivalent to M.B.A of Indian Universities.
The school of business makes a point of sensitising its students to the plight of the common people, the social-economic realities of our times. In essence, the school produces dedicated managers who also excel as human beings. Students are encouraged to take part in social-outreach programmes such as Amma's free-housing plan and eye camps for the poor.
They give clothes to the poor villagers in the surrounding community and organise feasts for them on religious festival days such as Onam and Pongal. |

Students take "Self-Awareness and Personality Growth," where they learn about the lives of mahatmas such as Amma, J. Krishnamurti, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Jesus Christ. "You start understanding yourself and the human character, exactly what the mind is, what thought processes are, and something of Indian psychology," says the executive director of the Ettimidai campus, Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya.

"The course has made me much more aware of my actions towards others. Now I am more observant of my thoughts and how I behave in different circumstances," says Rajesh, a graduate in Human Resource Management. "I learnt how to refocus within myself. I found the teachings of different Masters fascinating because of the light they throw on how to manage one's self. Time passed very quickly in the class because we were searching together. He made us 'seek!' |

"Each month, I went to the villages for bhajans with the children. Also through the National Social Service scheme, we cleaned up villages. But these are small things compared to being involved in the eye camps. This really opened us up. At first we students were hesitant and even questioned why it was necessary. Then when we arrived in the village we were very touched, even shocked, to encounter the poor people. Some of us even had tears in our eyes when we saw that if people have a simple operation they have their sight restored. It was an unforgettable experience."
The school's two-year postgraduate-degree programme was approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education. It leads to a postgraduate diploma in management.
